Update on Library Services

I write with an update on library services between now and the extended break.

Please note that between Thanksgiving and the Extended Break

  • Olin and Science buildings will close as of 12 noon on 11/25 for the Thanksgiving break.
  • Starting Monday, 11/30 through Friday, 12/11, Olin and Science will be open daily 12noon-5pm. Online services and in-building pickup continue as usual.
  • From Saturday, 12/12 to Thursday 12/23, Olin and Science buildings will be closed.  Online services continue as usual.
  • If you are on campus, you can request books and other materials online and pick them up in the Olin vestibule beginning Monday, December 14th.  Hours for pickup are 9-5pm, Monday-Friday except during holiday breaks.
  • If you are off-campus for the extended break, you can request books and other materials online and ask us to mail them your home address.
  • All loans (except for DVDs) have been extended until February 2021

I will be in touch regarding January building hours at a later point.  Should changing campus conditions warrant any changes in hours or services, I will let you know.  You can see the latest information on the Library Services During COVID web page:  https://www.wesleyan.edu/libr/services.html

If you have time, I encourage you to attend “Before You Go” on Wednesday, November 18th 4:30-6:30pm in the Labyrinth Tent.  Folks from the Writing Workshop, Presentation Studio, Library, Peer Advisors, Math Workshop, CAPS, and the Resource Center will be there to connect you with resources and advice to support finishing the semester and completing final exams, papers, and projects remotely and successfully. There will be snacks.

“Before You Go”

Worried about working remotely for final exams and projects this year? We get it. “Before You Go” for the end of the semester, stop by the Labyrinth Tent this Wednesday (Nov. 18th) between 4:30-6:30pm to see what campus resources are still available for you as many of us leave campus! Enter a raffle just by coming to the event, and pick up a goodie bag while you’re there, too. The Writing Workshop, Presentation Studio, Library, Peer Advisors, Math Workshop, CAPS, and the Resource Center will all be there to give more information about the support they offer. Repatriation, Indigenous Rights, and Museum Collections: A Conversation for NAGPRA’s 30th Anniversary

On November 16, 1990, Congress passed the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This important human rights legislation aimed to restore dignity and respect to the ancestral human remains and cultural objects being held in museum collections, and provided a process for their repatriation to culturally affiliated tribes, lineal descendants, and Native Hawaiian Organizations. Join us for a panel discussion about what repatriation means for indigenous communities, museums, and our understanding of the human past and our collective present.

CSS Information Session 12/1

An Invitation from the Tutors and Students in the College of Social Studies to the Class of 2024

The CSS tutors and students invite you to a CSS Info Session via Zoom on Tuesday, December 1, from 4:30 p.m. –  5:30 p.m.

Several of the CSS tutors and current students will speak at this session. This meeting will afford you an opportunity to ask questions about the CSS to the tutors and current students.

The College of Social Studies (CSS) is a rigorous, multidisciplinary major consisting of four subject areas: History, Government, Political and Social Theory, and Economics. Founded in 1959, the CSS is reading and writing intensive program that facilitates intellectual development based on weekly essays, small group tutorials, and a vibrant intellectual environment outside the classroom

  • If you cannot attend this Information Session, you can request to receive a recording of it from Martha Crebbin. In addition, a second CSS Information Session is planned for early February.
  • Applications for the CSS will be available on our website beginning on Tuesday, February 2nd, at 2:00 p.m.

The Eco Facilitators are Hiring

The Sustainability Office is looking for a group of 9-16 students (preference for freshmen and sophomores) with a range of environmental and non-environmental interests and backgrounds to join the 2021-22 Eco Facilitator program! EFs work to provide students with the tools, education, and encouragement necessary to develop sustainable living practices, as well to encourage a sense of environmental consciousness and social responsibility on campus, regardless of prior sustainability knowledge.

In Spring 2021, hired EFs will enroll in a semester-long student forum focused on learning about sustainability at Wesleyan, connecting environmental issues on campus to broader social injustices, and developing effective strategies to encourage sustainable practices. Throughout the 2021-22 school year, EFs will be paid to take out compost in their assigned dorm and conduct sustainability-related projects across campus. Working as an Eco Facilitator is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills and take part in building a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive campus community.
